Beyonce Waves Her 'B' Flag In New Video Set Photos

Leaked pictures show diva in an elaborate headdress, surrounded by female 'soldiers.'
By James Montgomery

On Tuesday, Beyoncé fans went batty when photos of the Queen B — reportedly taken on the set of her brand-new music video — began making the rounds. The blurry snaps show B rocking a fierce faux-hawk, white jumpsuit and sunglasses, reportedly Givenchy couture (like there was any doubt) and, according to fan sites like BeyonceDaily, are from the shoot for a song called "Girl."

Aside from that, details remained scarce ... until Wednesday (April 13) that is, when even more on-set pics hit the Net. In the new photos, Beyoncé stands in a smoky, post-apocalyptic war zone, wearing an elaborate headdress and holding a battle flag aloft (and it sure looks like said flag is emblazoned with a big "B"). She's surrounded by an army of dancers, each of whom is dressed in what could charitably be called "Les Misérables" chic, their fists thrust triumphantly in the air.

It's not exactly clear if the photos are taken from the set of "Girl" or, as some reports suggest, they're from another video shoot, supposedly for a song called "'Till the End of the World." Regardless, Beyoncé is clearly up to something, and her flurry of activity only lends credence to a report in Australia's The Daily Telegraph that she'll be releasing the follow-up to her massive I Am ... Sasha Fierce in late June.

When MTV News last spoke to Beyoncé, she told us she was aiming to bust barriers with the new album, proclaiming that she was drawing inspiration from "every type of genre."

"I'm not in a box," she said. "It's not R&B. It's not typically pop. It's not rock. It's just everything I love all mixed together in my own little gumbo of music."

What do you think of Beyoncé's video-set photos? Tell us in the comments!

Ke$ha Wants 'Till The World Ends' Remix To 'Take Over Airwaves'

Singer says her collaboration with Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj made a 'supergroup of three hot, strong women.'
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias

Earlier this week, Britney Spears, Ke$ha and Nicki Minaj dropped their femme-fatale-friendly remix of the Spears club track "Till the World Ends." The already fun song got super-charged thanks to Minaj's cutting verses and Ke$ha's recognizable vocals.

"I'm a massive fan of both the ladies I share the track with," K told MTV News on Wednesday at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards. "I wrote 'TTWE' for Britney with [producers] Dr. Luke and Max [Martin] and she killed it and I loved it, but I just thought a supergroup of three hot, strong women could just take over the airwaves."

Ke$ha went on to give props to both the ladies. "I'm such a massive fan of Britney and I'm such a massive supporter of Nicki and a fan, and chicks sometimes don't team up. I don't know why, but I'm, like, huge on the girl power, so I just wanted to make a power girl track take over."

The remix quickly won praise from fans who seem to think the new features step up the song's game. "You know, with the three of us, I wasn't necessarily surprised [people like it] because I'm such a massive fan of Nicki Minaj and obviously with Britney I'm a fan of it, [taking] myself out of the equation," she said. "I'm just happy people like it."

So did Ke$ha (who once sang backup for Spears) feel any pressure writing a song for Britney? "There was no pressure. Writing for somebody else is really fun 'cause I consider myself a songwriter first and foremost," she explained. "So it was so much fun to put my brain in the sexy Britney Spears brain and express myself almost as if I were possessed by her."

Lady Gaga To Donate $1 Million For Homeless Youth

Charity will be announced at Robin Hood Foundation benefit concert.

Do you want to help Lady Gaga give away $1 million dollars to charity? Well, little monsters, here's your chance! Mother Monster is hooking up with the Robin Hood Foundation to help homeless youth in New York, her hometown.

Fans can go to Gaga's Facebook page to weigh in on which organization — The Door, Hetrick-Martin Institute, Lawyers for Children, Safe Horizon or SCO Family of Services — will be gifted the sum ($500,000 a year over two years).

The results will be announced May 9 at a special concert benefiting Robin Hood. "I'm thrilled to be working with the Robin Hood Foundation to distribute funds to help the youth of New York City," Gaga said in a statement. "NYC is my hometown and I think investing in these kids' future will go a long way."

Days before Gaga attends the Robin Hood gala, her HBO special will air. While it is a concert special, it also serves as a love letter to the Big Apple. Shot during her time in New York for two tour stops at Madison Square Garden earlier this year, the documentary shows the singer opening up about her love for the city and how it helped shape her as an artist.

"There was never a question in my mind that I was gonna make it and that this is my destiny and that we were all gonna make it as the kids of this city, as the New York generation," she says, driving through the streets of New York to MSG. "My faith in my creativity and my artistry has nothing to do with making it," she continued. "We kind of had already made it when we were playing for nothing downtown. ... We still felt like we were superstars."

Which organization do you hope Gaga's money goes to? Sound off below!

Usher, Ke$ha And More Help Dance Music Go Pop In 2010

But is it here to stay? Our music-industry experts weigh in.
By Akshay Bhansali

Ke$ha
Photo: Andreas Rentz/ Getty Images

In 2010, pop princesses, R&B icons and chart-dominating newcomers all danced to the same beat. Not only did dance music go pop, but pop music caught the club-music bug.

Between Katy Perry's "Firework," Ke$ha's "We R Who We R," Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)," Enrique Iglesias' "I Like It," Usher's "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" and "OMG" and countless other singles, established artists definitely looked to dance beats for surefire hits. And two of this year's biggest success stories in music were Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz; could there be a soul left in this country who hasn't heard "Dynamite" or "In My Head"?

The love went both ways, with dance music's biggest stars finding mainstream success this year. Dance-music maestro deadmau5 took up house-artist duties at this year's VMAs, and Swedish House Mafia and Usher teamed up for a medley of their gems at the American Music Awards.

So how did this happen? We caught up with some music-industry experts to get their takes.

"You definitely saw tempos go up this year," Jon Caramanica of The New York Times told MTV News. "And I think what you had are a lot of producers who are really familiar with nightclub stuff. They are familiar with Europe. Things are happening on a more global scale now."

"I think everything from Europe, and sometimes even Asia, it comes to America, and we just adopt things a little bit slower," said Jared Eng of JustJared.com. "I think it was just a change. People like different types of music at different times. And dance was of this moment."

Noah Callahan of Complex magazine added: "I think 2010 saw the merging of the pop and dance genres. Pop artists realized that there were best practices that could be borrowed from dance music. And, ultimately, [all] pop music that has been made in the past 20 years had ended up being remixed for the club by dance artists. I think they basically just cut out the middleman and went straight there."

Dance music being introduced into the hip-hop and R&B realms was particularly notable this year.

"I think David Guetta kind of at the end of last year and the beginning of this year spearheaded it," said freelance writer Julianne Escobedo Shepherd. "He produced a lot of tracks. I think as trends go, people revile 'unst-unst.' But it's just coming back around. Big-room techno was a way for people to get decadent in a year that no one could get decadent."

"You have someone like will.i.am, who's like, 'Well, I spent all this time in Ibiza, and this is what they are doing,' and he wants to find a way to bring that into his music," Caramanica said of the Black Eyed Peas mastermind. "R&B especially became dance music. And especially with your Jason Derülos, Taio Cruzes. Guys like that would have literally been blocked at the border two years ago. That would not have made it through customs. And now all of a sudden they have #1 songs. I think will.i.am had a lot to do with that last year."

Elliott Wilson of RapRadar.com added: "It's actually even affected hip-hop. I was talking to Q-Tip, and his next record, I feel like that's gonna kind of go in that vein. I know that was also Jay-Z's thought process with Blueprint 3 at first, that he wanted to make a little bit more of a world music [vibe], a little more dancey. I think the kids today want to go to the clubs. They wanna have a good time. They wanna dance. So I think the artists of today are trying to kind of feed that audience."

"I think it's caught on this year because the people who've done it have been successful," offered Clover Hope of Vibe magazine. "Like 'OMG,' with usher, he didn't have success until he made a dance record. He had 'There Goes My Baby' and these really, like, adult-contemporary records that didn't really catch on. And then once you see that everybody is doing it and that people are liking it, they are like, 'OK, let me just try this out.' It's like Auto-Tune. Like, 'Let me see what I sound like on a record by David Guetta.' They end up liking it and doing more of it."

So does the club-music trend have staying power. According to our tastemakers, not so much.

"I do think it's a blip," Caramanica said. "I don't think that's gonna be something that lasts in America. I think this is gonna be a moment we'll all look back on and go, 'Wasn't that weird when Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz had #1 records?"

"At some point, these R&B artists will get kind of sick of it and be like, 'Let me go back to my soul background,' " Hope said. "When you actually have to say something, dance doesn't really lend itself to substance. And I think that R&B artists, they really want to talk about love and in a deep way, and to do that, you need to do, like, a soul or a traditional R&B record. I want to say that it's kind of a fad."

"I think music is very cyclical," Eng offered. "So I think dance music might be here for a little bit, but I'm sure it will phase out at some point."

Wilson called dance music "the sound of today. I think that people want more aggressive, faster beats, and I think that that probably has legs until at least next summer."

What do you think? Is dance music here to stay? Let us know in the comments!

The nominees for the 2011 CMT Music Awards are out, and it seems that there's no awards show Justin Bieber won't be nominated for.

The Canadian superstar managed to nab a CMT nod for his collaboration with Rascal Flatts on the reworked version of "That Should Be Me." He's up against Jason Aldean with Kelly Clarkson for "Don't You Wanna Stay," Kid Rock featuring Sheryl Crow for "Collide," Aaron Lewis featuring George Jones and Charlie Daniels for "Country Boy" and Loretta Lynn, Miranda Lambert and Sheryl Crow for "Coal Miner's Daughter" in the Collaborative Video of the Year category.

Taylor Swift got three nods for her video for "Mine": She's up for Best Web Video of the Year (for her performance at her Speak Now album-release party), Female Video of the Year and Video of the Year. Carrie Underwood is up for two prizes, facing off against Swift in the Female Video of the Year and Video of the Year categories with her video for "Undo It."

Other Female Video of the Year nominees include Sara Evans ("A Little Bit Stronger"), Miranda Lambert ("The House That Built Me") and Reba McEntire ("Turn On the Radio").

A number of other crossover acts such as Sugarland, Lady Antebellum and Miranda Lambert are up for the night's big award, Video of the Year. Other nominees in the category include Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts, Zac Brown Band and The Band Perry.

Audrina Patridge, Ke$ha, Adam Lambert Share Prom Memories

'Me and my gay best friend just danced until 8 a.m.,' Ke$ha tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

It's prom season, and that means high schoolers across this great land will be renting tuxes, buying fancy dresses and negotiating the details of their curfews with parents. So, before you take your pictures and get in your limos, we asked some Hollywood A-listers to recall their fondest prom memories.

"I had a great prom," Ne-Yo told MTV News. "I didn't get to go with who I wanted to go with. I got my second choice, but my second choice turned out to be the one I was supposed to be there with, so it turned out good."

Ke$ha, never one to say no to a party, had the best night of all her friends. "I went to prom with my gay best friend, and let me tell you, I had way more fun than anybody else at a prom with their boyfriends," she recalled. "Everybody else was, like, crying and drama and breaking up, and me and my gay best friend just danced until 8 a.m."

"Hellcats" star Aly Michalka doesn't have a favorite prom memory — because she never went to prom. "I was homeschooled, so I don't even think we had a fake prom," she lamented. "Like, maybe we had a home-school prom and I wasn't invited?"

While everything always seems to be in peril on "The Vampire Diaries," star Nina Dobrev had a less tumultuous night: "Having everyone get together and such a final celebration [is what I remember]."

Romeo went big for his prom. "My senior prom, I remember I pulled up in my red Ferrari. I was feeling like James Bond," he said. "And it was one of the best nights of my life."

"My favorite prom memory was probably going shopping for a dress, and our boyfriends at the time dressed up as 'Dumb & Dumber,' " Audrina Patridge laughed. "And so we were like, 'We can't dress up dorky ... we have to look good.' "

Roots drummer ?uestlove made a big decision on the night of his prom: "June 2, 1989, was my very last haircut; prom haircut, totally butchered my hair. He butchered my hair, and I vowed never again to ever get in a barber chair, so I grew that Afro on my prom night."

Adam Lambert said his prom date was a 10, so he definitely had a fun night. "I had a great prom. I had an awesome time," he said. "I went with one of my best friends in high school. Her name was Lauren, and she was really hot. She wore a really hot red dress, so I felt like I had arm candy."

Rebecca Black's 'Friday' Beats Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga On YouTube

'Friday' has had 100 million views to date, with Black currently working on her second single, 'LOL.'
By Gil Kaufman

Rebecca Black in her video for "Friday"
Photo: Ark Music Factory

There was a minute there when Rebecca Black's "Friday" video was, almost literally, inescapable. Whether the success of the viral hit was being covered on such unlikely outlets as CNN or NPR, getting parodied on late-night television, or just bouncing around from Twitter accounts to e-mail in-boxes and music blogs, the tune by the previously unknown 13-year-old had the kind of white-hot media buzz usually reserved for a Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber.

Well, guess what? The little $2,000 pay-to-play ditty-that-could can now claim to have surpassed such major label juggernauts as Bieber and Gaga. According to a Reuters report, the no-budget clip for Black's song has been viewed more than 100 million times on YouTube since it was released on February 10, surpassing the totals for Gaga's "Born This Way" and Bieber's "Pray" videos, based on numbers provided by Visible Measures, a company that tracks the performance of Web videos.

Scratch that. If you count spoofs, other versions and home-brewed takes on the song, it's actually been seen more than 200 million times. Crunching the same numbers for "Born This Way," it has generated 180 million online views, while "Pray" has racked up 65 million.

It doesn't seem as though Gaga minds the competition from the Ark Music Factory product, as she reportedly referred to "Friday" as "genius" recently. Black told us she "freaked out" when she heard the compliment from Mother Monster. "I'm 13 and I never thought Lady Gaga would even know my name. I'm the kind of girl that dances to Lady Gaga with a hairbrush in her room at night," Black told MTV News in late March before she notched her YouTube record.

Black is reportedly at work on her second single, "LOL," though a release date for that song has not yet been announced.

J.J. Abrams Calls 'Super 8' Work With Steven Spielberg 'Liberating'

'I felt free to allow the influences of his films to rise to the surface,' director tells MTV News.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

If it were up to J.J. Abrams, he'd be able to keep his mouth shut about "Super 8" — his upcoming, Steven Spielberg-produced summer blockbuster — until the movie slips into theaters June 10. That PR-free approach may have flown back when Abrams was making home movies to premiere, say, in his parents' basement, but that's just not how Hollywood works.

And so, as part of MTV News' Summer Movie Preview week, Abrams skipped away from a scoring set, where he's overseeing the orchestral music, to chat about the movie. We already know the film is set in Ohio in 1979 and follows six kids who are using a Super 8 camera to make a zombie flick. One night, they end up filming near a set of train tracks and capture a calamitous wreck and the creature that emerges from the wreckage. Soon the military pulls into town, and things start to get, well, very funky for these unsuspecting residents.

What we haven't learned much about is the nature of Abrams' collaboration with Spielberg, the way the director has managed to nod at Spielberg's films without copying them and much more. Thankfully, Abrams stepped in to provide us with some answers.

MTV News: Are we tearing you away from finishing your film? I hope not.

J.J. Abrams: We're about to lock picture, which I'm excited to do. I'm actually watching the musicians walk into the scoring stage right now with their cello cases and bass cases. It's an amazing score that Michael Giacchino has written. This part of the process is always the most exciting, because everything's coming together. The music is always one of the most exciting parts for me. I'm thrilled to be at this stage.

MTV News: Much of the discussion about this film has been about the blend of your talents and Spielberg's. Is there a nod to [frequent Spielberg collaborator] John Williams' scoring in this, or do you let Michael go at it without the specter of John Williams over him?

Abrams: I feel like on this movie, both he and I were as influenced by growing up and making movies as, let's face it, those loser kids who weren't the most popular, as we were influenced by the films of that era. What's cool about working on this film, especially with Michael, is that he and I shared the same kind of memories of childhood, even though we grew up 3,000 miles apart. When we met, we bonded over how we had the same kind of references and making movies as kids. I don't know how you would separate the various influences that Michael has experienced, including the remarkable scores of John Williams. What he's doing is very much his own voice, which is the only thing I'd want. I'd never ask him to do a score that apes a pre-existing score. But certainly the mood, the DNA of this movie, is as influenced by the films of the era as it was by the personal experiences we both had.

MTV News: What's cool about this is it seems like the kind of film we haven't seen for a long time. There's an earnestness and sweetness to it, in contrast to some of the cynicism we might see in summer movies. Would you agree?

Abrams: I haven't thought about it in terms of earnestness, but avoiding schmaltz is a massively important tenet to uphold. The goal for this is not to be earnest, but to be emotional. Sometimes the emotion is laughter and comedy and joy. Sometimes it's terror. Sometimes it's heartbreak or love-struck or petrified. One of the problems with something that is considered earnest is that it's somehow self-serious and lacking humor. That, to me, would be a disaster.

MTV News: How much have you used Mr. Spielberg as a resource throughout the process?

Abrams: He's a real producer of this movie. He worked with me to develop the story. We had countless story meetings prior to and following the script. What was wonderful about working with him is the ongoing conversation. Because I was working with him, I felt free to allow the influences of his films to rise to the surface. If I hadn't been collaborating with him, I would have been much more self-conscious. This is literally an Amblin movie. The ability to play with certain conventions of movies that he wrote, produced or directed was liberating. I didn't feel like I couldn't dare push in on a character's face, but that would feel like a shot you've seen. If it was the 100 percent right moment for that, I felt like, "Screw it, this is what it is." It began and was written and directed and is being finished not as an homage, but there are moments of homage in it. Steven will be here in 20 minutes at the scoring session. He came to the set a number of times. I showed him my first cut. I showed him last week what is minutes away from the final cut. He's been an incredible collaborator.

MTV News: Do you have a favorite film from the Amblin era in the late '70s and early '80s?

Abrams: There are films that he made, even if they weren't technically Amblin movies, that I loved. I loved "Poltergeist." Obviously, I was a huge fan of the films he directed. "Back to the Future" I loved. "Goonies" was a blast. Any number of movies that he made. The common thread in all of those, which is my favorite thing about them, is that it's relatable, ordinary people, sometimes in a classic suburbia, going through something terrifying or extraordinary or something sci-fi or supernatural. Even "Jaws" or "Close Encounters" had that.

MTV News: So in "Super 8," how far along will it be until we see the creature?

Abrams: I would say the film will obviously answer that question.

MTV News: So this isn't a "Star Trek" or a "Mission Impossible" — a pre-existing franchise. It's frankly being marketed on your name. Is there a push and pull in terms of how much to show in these last weeks before release?

Abrams: I feel like the fun of the movie is the experience of these characters and the most fun you can have as an audience is not going in feeling like you've seen more of the film than the characters have. My gut would be, as it always is, is that less is more. We have no intention of spoiling the fun prior to the film being released.

It's Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated films of the coming months. Get ready to gorge on inside looks at "Captain America," "The Hangover Part II," "X-Men: First Class," "Cowboys & Aliens" and more.

Check out everything we've got on "Super 8."

Michael Jackson Estate Rakes In $310 Million To Date

Singer left behind more than $400 million in debt.

Between album sales, movie profits, licensing arrangements and lucrative deals for Cirque du Soleil shows, the estate of late King of Pop Michael Jackson has raked in more than $300 million since the singer's shocking death in June 2009.

According to TMZ, legal documents released on Thursday reveal that executors of MJ's estate have managed to make a major dent in the more than $400 million in debt that Jackson owed at the time of his death.

The first accounting from the executors shows that they have already spent around $159 million paying back various debts, income taxes and other expenses, which include providing support for the pop star's mother, Katherine Jackson, as well as his three young children.

"Although there remain unresolved creditor claims, pending litigation and additional challenging business, tax and legal issues, and the estate is not yet in a condition to be closed, the executors have made substantial progress in reducing the estate's debt," the documents state, according to a Reuters report. Two of Jackson's longtime confidants, attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain, were named as administrators in a will sign by the pop icon.

In addition to paying to make "substantial improvements" to the Jackson family's Havenhurst estate in Encino, California, the executors also spent an undetermined amount of money on "last illness and funeral and memorial service expenses." Those costs included a $900,000 payment to the Forest Lawn Memorial cemetery where Jackson is buried and $35,000 on expenses described as "costume for memorial."

TMZ reported that not only did the famously cash-strapped Jackson have more than $400 million in debt, but his estate also owed more than $40 million to concert promoter AEG tied to the scuttled This Is It Tour, for which MJ was rehearsing when he died unexpectedly. They've also paid $27.2 million in taxes and $4 million in mortgage payments on Jackson's properties.

Despite the solid sales of the Michael album and millions of units of the singer's back catalog being sold, as well as the box office of the "This Is It" movie and DVD sales, the estate is not nearly out of the woods. TMZ noted that the administrators have received more than 65 creditors' claims, some of which are subject to "extremely high" interest rates, and there are several outstanding lawsuits against the estate in several countries.

'Breaking Dawn' Sex Scene 'Feels Like Real Love Scene,' Kristen Stewart Says

Sex was 'not necessarily vampire-y, which is good,' actress tells Entertainment Weekly.

The countdown to "Breaking Dawn" is truly under way, and evidence of the excitement for the last "Twilight" flicks is popping up all over the place. In the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, Twi-hards are getting an in-depth look at the films, the first of which opens later this year.

"We shot everything — whether it's the lovemaking or the childbirth — as potent and powerful as it can be," director Bill Condon explains in the new issue. "It will be interesting to see whether there will be people who think it too disturbing for this universe."

Of course, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson star in some of the most anticipated scenes in the upcoming movies. One of those is the long-awaited sex scene between Bella and Edward, stills of which hit the Internet, much to the dismay of those involved with making the film. "It feels like a real love scene, not necessarily vampire-y, which is good," Stewart said.

Fans are also eager to see how Bella's painful birth scene will be played out. "It's funny because when [the PG-13 issue] comes up, everybody thinks it's all about the sex," the actress said. "The birth is really effective, and I've heard it really hits you in the face. But what could it have been? It could have been shocking and grotesque, because that's how it was written in the book. ... I would have loved to have been puking up blood."

Mostly, though, audiences will be excited to see the "Breaking Dawn" wedding scene, the moment that leads to all those others. "It was one of the coolest things that I've done," Stewart recalled. "There was a certain point when I walked on set, and I saw everyone from the entire cast sitting there in the pews, about to do their bit. And it was just so perfect for me in that moment. It was so emotional in such a real way. I literally felt like thanking them for coming."

The magazine also features some exclusive photos from the movie. Those shots include intimate moments between Jacob and Bella, photos of the Denali clan and one of Jacob running through the rain. (With a shirt on — sorry, ladies!)

"Everybody is always complaining to me that I don't have to wear the contacts, I don't have to wear the white makeup or wear wigs and all that stuff. And I'm like, 'I'm the one in the freezing rain and cold not wearing a shirt!' " Taylor Lautner says in the issue. "I paid my dues in 'New Moon' and 'Eclipse.' "

Sure, Bella and Edward have some big moments in these flicks, but Jacob also meets the love of his life, their baby girl, Renesmee. "There were many times I walked up to Stephenie [Meyer] and asked her, 'What exactly is imprinting?' " Lautner said. "It's still a very confusing thing for me, so don't ask."
